Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of chronic pain and lameness in older horses. Modern management approaches can maintain quality of life for many years, but welfare assessment and honest decision-making are essential.
Osteoarthritis causes chronic pain that is often underestimated because horses mask pain and because owners are invested in maintaining working horses. The welfare obligation is to assess pain honestly and treat aggressively - under-treating equine osteoarthritis because of concern about masking lameness or enabling inappropriate work condemns horses to unnecessary suffering. Quality of life assessment that tracks pain levels, willingness to engage, and normal daily behaviour helps owners and vets make difficult retirement and euthanasia decisions. Horses that can no longer be maintained in adequate comfort with available treatments deserve a peaceful death rather than extended suffering.
