Wild Tawny Owl Welfare and Urbanisation

Tawny owls have adapted well to suburban and urban environments, but face specific welfare challenges from traffic, rodenticide poisoning, and the human-modified landscape they now inhabit.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Tawny owl welfare in urban and suburban areas reflects the general challenges facing wildlife in human-modified landscapes. Road mortality causes traumatic death for individual owls, particularly young birds in autumn that have not yet learned to identify traffic risk. Rodenticide accumulation causes chronic liver damage and haemorrhage that weakens owls progressively before death. The welfare of fledgling tawny owls is frequently compromised by well-intentioned 'rescue' of healthy birds that simply need to complete the normal fledging process on the ground - unnecessary capture and captivity causes stress and delays parental feeding without benefit.
