Global Poultry Welfare Disparities

Poultry welfare standards vary enormously between countries. Understanding global disparities helps advocates target efforts and supports better trade policy that does not undercut domestic higher welfare production.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Global poultry welfare disparities represent both an ethical problem and a policy challenge. The welfare gap between the best European production and the worst global production is enormous - billions of birds in regions with no welfare regulation live in conditions that would be illegal in the UK. UK and EU consumers may inadvertently support lower welfare production through imported processed food ingredients derived from global poultry supply chains. Trade policy that maintains welfare standards in imported poultry products is therefore a welfare issue, not just an economic one. Extending corporate welfare commitments globally, combined with trade measures that incentivise welfare improvement, represents the most practical path to improving welfare for the billions of chickens raised annually outside high-standard jurisdictions.
