Wild Atlantic salmon populations in UK rivers have declined severely. Their recovery requires clean water, barrier removal, and sustainable management of both freshwater and marine threats.
Wild Atlantic salmon welfare is compromised at multiple life stages. Juveniles in degraded freshwater habitat with poor water quality, elevated temperatures, and reduced invertebrate prey face nutritional stress and increased disease vulnerability. Migrating smolts passing near salmon farms face sea lice infestation that causes skin damage and reduces survival. Returning adult salmon that cannot reach upstream spawning grounds due to barriers face the exhaustion of extended downstream waiting, exposure to predators, and ultimately reproductive failure. Climate-driven water temperature increases are increasingly limiting suitable habitat to progressively smaller upstream refugia, concentrating populations in areas that may become inadequate under continued warming.
