Animal shelters provide vital care for millions of homeless dogs and cats, but shelter environments themselves create significant welfare challenges that progressive shelters are working to overcome.
Shelter environments, despite good intentions, impose significant welfare costs. Dogs may develop kennel stress within days, showing repetitive behaviors, reduced immune function, and behavioural deterioration. Cats suffer from the loss of territory and control. Progressive shelters use enrichment programs, foster networks, play groups for dogs, and cat colony rooms to mitigate these impacts. Reducing time in shelter through efficient adoption processes is the most effective welfare intervention.
