The UK dairy goat sector is smaller than dairy cattle but faces similar welfare challenges around kid separation, milk production demands, and end-of-productive-life welfare.
Dairy goat welfare shares many challenges with dairy cattle but has received less attention. Kid welfare is a primary concern - male kids born into dairy systems have limited value and face either immediate killing or short lives in meat production. Mother-kid separation causes distress in both, with does and kids vocalising persistently for days. High-producing dairy goat breeds face physiological stress equivalent to high-yielding dairy cows. Consumer awareness and welfare certification schemes are less developed for goats than for cattle.
