Cephalopod molluscs are among the most cognitively sophisticated invertebrates, and their welfare in research, aquaria, and fisheries settings is receiving growing scientific and policy attention.
Cephalopod welfare has advanced faster than almost any other invertebrate group due to the compelling evidence for their cognitive complexity. EU and UK legal recognition of their sentience was a landmark. Yet most cephalopods encountered by humans - in fisheries, research, and increasingly in proposed aquaculture - receive no practical welfare protection. Capture fishing methods cause significant trauma. Research without enrichment causes psychological suffering in such curious, exploratory animals. Proposed octopus farming would create welfare harms at industrial scale in animals whose needs are incompatible with intensive aquaculture.
