Shrimp are slaughtered in vast numbers globally - over 440 billion annually - with almost no welfare protections at slaughter despite growing evidence of their capacity for pain.
The sheer scale of shrimp slaughter makes this a welfare issue of enormous magnitude. Unlike fish, shrimp are killed in bulk with essentially no individual consideration. If shrimp experience pain - and current science suggests they likely do - then the suffering involved in uncontrolled slaughter is immense. The Shrimp Welfare Project and allied organisations are working to develop and promote practical stunning solutions. Consumer pressure on retailers and producers can accelerate adoption of better practices.
