Despite bans in Europe and many US states, barren battery cages remain the dominant system for egg production globally. Over 6 billion hens worldwide live in these severely restrictive conditions.
The barren battery cage represents the most extreme example of sacrificing animal welfare for production efficiency. Hens in barren cages experience the full complement of welfare deprivations: confinement, frustration of natural behaviours, bone weakness, and social stress from forced proximity. Progress is real but slow - the EU transition took decades and many countries remain decades behind. Consumer purchasing choices, corporate commitments and policy advocacy remain the most powerful levers for accelerating global cage elimination.
