Broiler chickens are transported to slaughterhouses in crates without food or water. Journey conditions, duration and loading density significantly affect welfare at this critical stage.
The transport phase concentrates multiple stressors: handling by catchers, confinement in crates, vibration, temperature variation and deprivation of food and water. Broilers are fragile birds - their fast-growth bodies are ill-suited to the demands of transport. Dead on arrival rates, while a poor welfare indicator on their own, reflect the cumulative impact of pre-slaughter handling. Reducing the distance from farm to slaughter - through mobile slaughter units or regional abattoir networks - is the most impactful structural change, alongside improved container design and journey monitoring.
