Grey and harbour seal pups are born on UK beaches each autumn and winter. Human disturbance during this critical period can cause permanent separation from mothers and death.
Grey seal pup welfare during the pupping season is highly vulnerable to human disturbance. A mother that flees from a dog or approaching human may not return to her pup - the stress response overrides the maternal bond. A pup abandoned before weaning is complete will starve slowly over days. The physical and physiological investment that grey seal mothers make in their pups is enormous - they fast for three weeks while nursing, losing up to 4kg per day. Disturbance that breaks this bond wastes this investment and causes the pup's death. The welfare impact of responsible beach behaviour during pupping season is enormous.
