Cat Chronic Kidney Disease Management and Welfare

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common conditions in older cats. Early detection and appropriate management significantly improve quality of life and welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

CKD causes progressive suffering that is often invisible to owners until advanced. Nausea from uraemia, the bone pain of renal secondary hyperparathyroidism, and the systemic effects of chronic dehydration all compromise quality of life measurably. The welfare impact of early intervention - dietary phosphorus restriction, blood pressure management, fluid support - is substantial: many cats with CKD managed from early stages maintain good quality of life for years. Annual blood testing from age 7 allows early detection that dramatically changes the welfare trajectory. Owner education about recognising early signs (weight loss, increased drinking, reduced appetite) is critical.
