Aquatic Turtle and Terrapin Welfare in Captivity

Red-eared sliders and other aquatic turtles are popular pets, but their complex environmental needs are frequently unmet in captivity, causing significant welfare compromise.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Aquatic turtles are among the most commonly surrendered reptiles because purchasers are rarely prepared for their decades-long care requirements and the space they need as adults. A hatchling slider bought in a 30-litre starter tank will outgrow it within two years. The welfare problems that follow - inadequate filtration causing bacterial disease, insufficient basking causing respiratory infections, vitamin D deficiency from inadequate UV-B - are both preventable and common. Responsible acquisition means committing to potentially 30 years of proper husbandry and planning for what happens if circumstances change.
