Farmed Cattle Respiratory Disease Welfare and Management

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is the most economically costly and welfare-significant disease in UK beef and dairy cattle. Early detection and treatment are critical for reducing suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

BRD welfare impact is both acute and chronic. A calf in the early stages of pneumonia experiences fever, pleuritis pain, and the distress of laboured breathing. If untreated, the disease progresses to chronic lung consolidation and fibrinous pleuritis that causes persistent pain for weeks or months even in animals that survive. Early detection using standardised scoring systems, coupled with prompt veterinary treatment, dramatically reduces both the acute and chronic welfare burden. Prevention through transport stress reduction and vaccination addresses the underlying causes. Farms with low BRD prevalence have both better welfare and lower costs - the incentives for improvement are entirely aligned.
