Free-range and organic chickens must have outdoor access, but range quality determines whether birds actually use it and whether it delivers welfare benefits.
Free-range welfare is not delivered by range access alone - it requires range quality that actually draws birds outside. A bare, exposed field adjacent to a crowded shed may be technically compliant but delivers no welfare benefit if birds never use it. The most welfare-effective free-range systems provide shaded cover close to pop-holes that reduces predator exposure anxiety, multiple water and feeder points distributed across the range to encourage movement, and enriched outdoor areas that provide positive experiences. Range quality assessment - measuring actual range utilisation rather than just compliance with access requirements - is the most meaningful indicator of whether free-range delivers its welfare promise.
