Wild Smooth Snake and Sand Lizard Conservation Welfare

Smooth snakes and sand lizards are Britain's rarest reptiles, confined to lowland heathland. Their welfare depends on habitat management that maintains the specific conditions they require.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Smooth snake and sand lizard welfare is entirely dependent on habitat thermal quality and structure. As ectotherms, these reptiles require specific combinations of bare, warm basking substrate and dense vegetation cover - conditions that heathland management must actively create and maintain. Without appropriate basking sites, individuals cannot reach the body temperatures necessary for effective digestion, immune function and reproduction. Female sand lizards require loose, warm sand for successful egg development. Vegetation management - rotational cutting, grazing and prescribed burning - maintains the mosaic of microhabitats that allows these species to meet their thermal and behavioural needs.
