Welfare auditing in cattle farming uses validated outcome-based measures to assess actual animal welfare rather than simply checking management inputs. Understanding these tools helps producers and consumers.
Welfare auditing quality determines whether animal welfare standards are genuinely enforced or merely claimed. Input-based auditing - checking that housing dimensions meet specification - frequently misses the actual welfare of animals living in those conditions. Outcome-based auditing - measuring body condition, lameness prevalence, clean/dirty scores and behavioural indicators - reveals the actual welfare state of the animals regardless of management inputs. The transition to outcome-based auditing is fundamental to meaningful welfare assurance. Farms where welfare is genuinely good will welcome outcome-based assessment; farms where welfare is poor can hide behind input compliance but cannot obscure poor outcomes.
