Farmed Pig Environmental Enrichment Standards

EU law requires pigs to have access to enrichment materials, but the standard of compliance varies enormously. Understanding what constitutes genuinely effective enrichment is critical for welfare improvement.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Enrichment quality is the critical variable in determining whether legal compliance delivers welfare benefit. A single hanging chain in a pen of 15 pigs meets the letter of the law while providing no meaningful enrichment - one pig monopolises the object and others have nothing. Effective enrichment requires sufficient quantity that all pigs can access enrichment simultaneously, materials with physical properties that sustain engagement (manipulable, destructible, novel), and regular replacement to maintain novelty value. Farms that genuinely implement enrichment - not just comply with the standard - show measurably different behavioural and welfare outcomes from those that comply minimally.
