Organic dairy systems have specific welfare requirements including access to pasture and restrictions on routine medication. Understanding how organic standards translate to animal welfare outcomes matters.
Organic dairy welfare is genuinely superior to conventional on some measures and more challenging on others. Pasture access provides natural foraging behaviour, physical exercise and social expression that housed cattle cannot achieve. The restriction on routine antibiotic use incentivises prevention through good management - nutrition, housing and dry cow therapy management must be excellent to avoid disease without pharmaceutical cover. The welfare challenge is treating disease without antibiotics when prevention fails - there is a real risk that welfare-compromising subclinical disease goes undertreated. The best organic systems achieve better welfare through excellent management; the worst may allow disease to progress without adequate treatment.
