Disease prevention through strict biosecurity is the primary welfare and production protection strategy in salmon aquaculture. Understanding biosecurity principles helps evaluate producer welfare standards.
Salmon biosecurity is fundamentally a welfare investment. Disease outbreaks in salmon farms cause suffering at enormous scale - thousands or millions of individual fish experiencing the symptoms of viral or bacterial disease simultaneously. Prevention through biosecurity - fallowing, movement controls, vaccinations and site management - eliminates this suffering before it occurs. The welfare cost of biosecurity is minimal (handling during vaccination) compared to the welfare benefit (preventing mass disease events). Farms that maintain robust biosecurity frameworks have dramatically better welfare outcomes than those that prioritise production intensity over disease prevention.
