Farm Animal Welfare

Farmed Cattle Weaning Methods and Welfare

Weaning is one of the most stressful events in a calf's life. The method used dramatically affects both calf and cow welfare during this critical transition.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Weaning welfare is determined almost entirely by the method used and the preparation of both the cow and calf beforehand. Abrupt removal of dam contact triggers an acute distress response that persists for days - elevated cortisol, persistent vocalisation, reduced feed intake and compromised immune function. This is not unavoidable. Two-stage weaning with nose flaps or fenceline contact maintains visual and olfactory contact while ending nursing, dramatically reducing the acute stress response. The welfare investment is modest - nose flap equipment costs little relative to the welfare gain for every cow-calf pair weaned. More farms should adopt gradual weaning as standard practice.
