The hobby is a graceful summer migrant falcon that breeds across southern and central UK. Its welfare is linked to insect and small bird prey availability and nest site integrity.
Hobby welfare is closely tied to ecological health. As specialist aerial insect predators, hobbies are sentinels of ecosystem change. Neonicotinoid insecticides and habitat loss have reduced dragonfly and large insect populations, meaning hobbies face harder foraging conditions than historical populations. Chick welfare during periods of low insect availability is particularly concerning - hungry chicks in the nest cannot thermoregulate effectively and are vulnerable to cold nights. Maintaining wetland habitats that support dragonfly populations is therefore a direct hobby welfare intervention.
