Artificial intelligence is transforming the ability to monitor animal welfare at scale. Computer vision, acoustics, and sensor systems can detect welfare problems earlier and more consistently than human observation.
AI welfare monitoring represents one of the most promising technological developments for improving farm animal welfare at scale. Early detection of lameness, respiratory disease, and behavioural indicators of distress can reduce suffering duration and improve treatment outcomes. However, technology alone cannot improve welfare - the data must translate into management changes, and farms must have the resources and knowledge to act on alerts. The democratisation of welfare monitoring through affordable AI systems could particularly benefit small farms that cannot afford dedicated welfare officers.
