Farmed Organic Aquaculture Welfare

Organic aquaculture certification claims to represent a higher welfare standard. But the reality of organic fish and shellfish farming is more complex than labelling suggests.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Organic aquaculture presents a genuine welfare communications challenge. Consumers who choose organic fish products assuming significantly better welfare than conventional may be correct in some dimensions - particularly stocking density - but incorrect in others, particularly slaughter methods. True welfare improvements require explicit attention to slaughter, disease management practices, and enrichment, none of which are comprehensively addressed by current organic standards. Welfare-focused consumers are better served by specific welfare certification such as RSPCA Assured than by organic labels alone.
