Many European countries have banned mink farming on welfare grounds. The transition out of mink farming raises welfare questions for the animals remaining in farms during wind-down periods.
The welfare of mink during farm wind-downs and post-ban transitions deserves specific attention. Animals in farms awaiting closure may face reduced investment in welfare as economic incentives diminish. Mass culling operations - as seen in Denmark during COVID-19 - can involve gassing methods that are not instantaneous and may cause suffering. Where rehabilitation of farmed mink is attempted, the animals' fearfulness of humans and highly territorial nature makes successful welfare outcomes in sanctuary settings extremely difficult. Prevention through maintained welfare standards until farms fully close is preferable.
