Environmental enrichment for laboratory animals significantly improves their welfare and can also improve research quality. Modern 3Rs-aligned housing represents a major advance over historic barren conditions.
Laboratory animal housing has improved dramatically over the past two decades as evidence has accumulated showing both welfare and scientific benefits from enrichment. Mice provided with nesting material show lower corticosterone levels, better immune function, and more typical behavioural profiles - potentially improving the translational value of studies using them. The move toward social housing for compatible species reduces the stress of isolation. These improvements demonstrate that welfare and scientific quality are complementary rather than competing goals in laboratory animal science.
