Cultivated meat (grown from animal cells without slaughtering the animal) promises to dramatically reduce farm animal suffering. Understanding the welfare implications helps advocates assess this technology.
Cultivated meat's welfare promise is significant: replacing factory-farmed animal products with cell-cultivated equivalents could be among the most impactful animal welfare interventions in history. The main near-term welfare concern is fetal bovine serum use - FBS is collected from fetal calves during slaughter of pregnant cows, causing direct suffering. The industry is actively solving this, and FBS-free production is achievable. Donor animal welfare also requires attention, though the welfare cost of biopsy is vastly less than that of slaughter-based production.
