Free-roaming cats in neighbourhoods engage in territorial conflicts that cause welfare harm. Understanding feline social behaviour helps owners reduce inter-cat conflict.
Multi-cat welfare problems are significantly underrecognised. Cats experiencing chronic territorial stress from neighbourhood conflicts or incompatible housemates may show signs that owners attribute to unrelated illness: over-grooming, urinary problems (FIC triggered by stress), hiding, and appetite loss. The welfare cost is real but diffuse. Neutering, microchip cat flaps, territory management, and in multi-cat households, careful compatibility matching and environmental complexity all reduce inter-cat conflict and its welfare consequences.
