UK butterfly populations have declined significantly. Conservation efforts focus on habitat, but individual butterfly welfare is an emerging consideration as sentience evidence grows.
Butterfly welfare sits at the frontier of invertebrate ethics. While the evidence for butterfly sentience is much weaker than for vertebrates, individual butterflies can suffer harm - predation, parasitoid infection, starvation, and pesticide poisoning are all potentially aversive experiences. At the population level, the decline of butterfly species represents habitat-level welfare failure for enormous numbers of individuals. Garden and farmland habitat restoration that supports butterfly breeding success is both a conservation and a potential welfare intervention for these ecologically important insects.
