Cattle undergo multiple painful procedures in routine farming. Pain management for cattle has improved but significant gaps remain between science and practice.
Cattle pain management represents one of the clearest welfare improvement opportunities in farming. The science of cattle pain is well established, the medications are available and relatively inexpensive, and the welfare benefit is unambiguous. The barrier is primarily attitudinal and economic - some farmers underestimate cattle pain sensitivity, and veterinary consultation fees for pain management advice add cost. However, multiple studies show that pain management also has production benefits through faster recovery and maintained weight gain after procedures. Both welfare and economic arguments point in the same direction: routine pain relief for all painful procedures should be standard.
