Farmed Alpaca Welfare: Certification and Standards

Alpaca farming is growing in the UK for fibre production and as tourist attractions. Their welfare needs are distinct from other livestock and standards remain underdeveloped.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Alpaca welfare in the UK faces the challenge of animals adapted to Andean conditions being managed in a very different climate and environment. The humid UK climate creates conditions favourable for foot rot and fleece problems not common in the dry Andes. Shearing annually is non-negotiable welfare management - overgrown fleeces cause heat stress and mobility impairment. The lack of formal welfare certification for alpacas means welfare standards depend heavily on individual farmer knowledge and commitment. The British Alpaca Society provides guidance, but the absence of third-party certification leaves welfare auditing incomplete.
