Dust-bathing is a fundamental natural behaviour for chickens that is frustrated in most commercial production systems. Its absence causes chronic welfare compromise.
Dust-bathing welfare science is clear: this is not an optional luxury behaviour but a fundamental need whose frustration causes genuine negative welfare states. Chickens deprived of dust-bathing opportunities and then given access show rebound behaviour - dust-bathing for far longer than normal, suggesting accumulated frustration. The fact that hens on wire floors perform sham dust-bathing demonstrates the strength of the motivation even without substrate. Welfare-positive environments must provide loose, friable substrate of sufficient depth and quality to allow complete dust-bathing sequences.
