Microchipping enables reunion of lost pets with owners. Compulsory microchipping for cats in England (2024) represents a welfare advance that reduces shelter overcrowding and euthanasia.
Microchipping welfare benefits are primarily indirect but very significant: microchipped animals that become lost are reunited with owners who can provide ongoing welfare management, rather than being euthanased in shelters as unknown strays. The welfare of stray cats and dogs in shelters - often distressed, sometimes chronically ill, and facing euthanasia when space runs out - is substantially improved when fewer animals enter that system due to improved owner identification. The minor welfare cost of the microchipping procedure is vastly outweighed by the welfare benefits of reunion with familiar owners and environments.
