Litter management in pig housing affects multiple welfare dimensions including flooring injury, respiratory health, and behavioural expression. Getting it right is fundamental.
Pig litter management is a welfare decision with multiple simultaneous impacts. Dry, friable straw simultaneously reduces tail biting through enrichment, respiratory disease through lower ammonia, skin and joint health through cushioning, and psychological wellbeing through rooting behaviour expression. Wet, compacted slatted flooring simultaneously creates all these welfare problems. The economic barrier to straw use is real in fully-slatted systems, but the welfare return on investment is substantial across multiple dimensions.
