Free-range eggs are the most popular egg type in the UK and many European markets, but significant welfare gaps exist between what consumers expect and what hens actually experience.
Free-range laying hens experience genuine improvements over caged systems in many respects, including natural behaviours, space, and social complexity. However, the free-range label encompasses enormous variation in actual welfare outcomes. Flock size, house design, range quality, feather cover, and management all substantially affect welfare independently of the legal minimum. Consumer choice of higher-tier or small-scale free-range products, or products with additional welfare certification, better aligns purchasing with welfare outcomes.
