Farmed Shrimp Welfare: Scale, Sentience, and Standards

Farmed shrimp is one of the world's most traded seafood products, produced at enormous scale with minimal welfare regulation, despite growing evidence that shrimp can experience pain.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed shrimp welfare presents a profound challenge: enormous scale of production, limited public awareness of sentience evidence, and almost complete absence of welfare standards or regulation. The 2022 UK recognition of decapod sentience is a landmark, but does not yet regulate farmed shrimp in the UK or their country of origin. Consumer awareness and selective purchasing from certified suppliers is the primary lever currently available. Given the scale - hundreds of billions of animals - even small per-animal welfare improvements would represent massive aggregate welfare gains.
