Horse Stereotypy Prevention: Why Vices Are Welfare Indicators

Stereotypic behaviours (stall vices) in horses - cribbing, weaving, box-walking - are indicators of inadequate welfare and largely preventable through appropriate management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Stereotypic behaviours in horses are not bad habits or character flaws - they are symptoms of welfare failure, typically insufficient turnout, social contact, and forage. The welfare-appropriate response to stereotypy development is to address the underlying management deficit, not to restrict the stereotypy itself. Cribbing collars that prevent wind-sucking address the symptom while leaving the cause intact, potentially worsening the horse's welfare. Prevention through appropriate management from the beginning - adequate turnout, forage, and social contact - is far more effective than any post-development intervention.
