Wildlife Rehabilitation Ethics and Decision-Making

Wildlife rehabilitation involves difficult ethical decisions about when to intervene, how to treat, and when to euthanise. Evidence-based frameworks improve welfare outcomes for individual animals.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Wildlife rehabilitation occupies a complex ethical space. Intervening inappropriately causes suffering; failing to intervene when necessary also causes suffering. The key to good welfare outcomes is evidence-based triage: assessing whether intervention is appropriate, what treatment is possible, what the realistic prognosis for release is, and when euthanasia is the most welfare-appropriate outcome. This requires suppressing the human impulse to save every animal and instead focusing on what genuinely serves the animal's interests. Training for the public in 'found an animal' decision-making would prevent enormous amounts of unnecessary intervention.
