Goat dairy production involves welfare challenges including kid separation and housing that deserve attention alongside the growing popularity of goat milk products.
Goat dairy welfare has received less regulatory and public attention than cow dairy despite sharing many of the same fundamental welfare challenges. Kid separation causes measurable distress comparable to that seen in dairy cattle. Male kids present a systemic welfare problem with no easy market solution. The growth of goat dairy in response to perceived health benefits should be accompanied by equal growth in welfare standards and consumer awareness. Extended suckling systems that allow kids to stay with mothers longer exist and provide better welfare but require consumer willingness to pay premium prices.
