Mediterranean sea bass and sea bream farming is a major European aquaculture sector. Welfare challenges including sea lice, density, and slaughter methods require targeted attention.
Sea bass and sea bream welfare has received less attention than Atlantic salmon despite comparable production volumes and welfare challenges. The predominance of ice slaughter in Mediterranean aquaculture is a particular concern, as sea bream can take 9-15 minutes to lose consciousness in ice baths. Percussive stunning or electrical stunning before slaughter would dramatically reduce this suffering and is technically achievable. Consumer awareness and retailer standards can drive improvement in this sector as they have in salmon aquaculture.
