Separation anxiety affects approximately 14-17% of dogs and causes significant suffering when alone. Advanced treatment combining behaviour therapy and medication offers good prognosis for many dogs.
Separation anxiety causes genuine suffering that is often misunderstood as misbehaviour. Dogs experiencing panic attacks when alone are in distress equivalent to severe anxiety in humans. Yet many owners are told their dog is 'attention-seeking' or 'manipulative', leading to punishment-based responses that worsen the condition. Recognition of separation anxiety as a welfare emergency requiring professional intervention - ideally combining a behaviourist with veterinary medication - is essential. The welfare cost of untreated separation anxiety, endured alone multiple times daily, is enormous.
