Channel catfish is the most important farmed fish in the United States. Welfare considerations in this sector have received less attention than in other aquaculture species.
Catfish welfare in US aquaculture represents a significant but understudied area of farm animal welfare. With hundreds of millions of catfish produced annually, even small improvements in welfare-critical parameters like oxygen management, stocking density, and slaughter methods could reduce enormous amounts of suffering. The challenge is that catfish welfare science lags behind mammalian research, and industry attention to welfare is limited. Building the evidence base and connecting welfare outcomes to production outcomes is the most effective route to improvement.
