Wild Animal Suffering and Predation Ethics

Predation causes immense suffering in nature. The philosophical and practical questions around whether and how to reduce predation suffering are among the most challenging in animal ethics.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Predation ethics sits at the frontier of animal welfare thinking. The suffering caused by natural predation is real, extensive, and beyond any individual animal's control. Yet the ecological functions of predator-prey relationships are genuine, and interventions to reduce predation at scale could have unpredictable consequences. The appropriate response may be to build the knowledge base through research, develop and test small-scale interventions with careful monitoring, and resist both the impulse to intervene immediately at scale and the impulse to dismiss predation suffering as simply natural and therefore irrelevant to welfare ethics.
