Freshwater prawn farming is expanding in Asia and beyond. Welfare science for these decapod crustaceans is developing alongside the UK's legal recognition of their sentience.
Freshwater prawn welfare exists in the same regulatory gap as marine shrimp welfare - legally recognised sentience but virtually no welfare standards in production. As production scales to meet global protein demand, establishing welfare-positive practices from the outset is more achievable than reform of an established low-welfare industry. The biological evidence for prawn sentience is strong enough to justify precautionary welfare protection. Consumers who care about animal welfare should apply the same scrutiny to prawn sourcing that they apply to other animal products.
