Wild boar have recolonised parts of England and Wales. Their management - through culling, exclusion and coexistence - raises important welfare and ethical questions.
Wild boar management in the UK lacks the statutory framework to ensure humane outcomes. Culling is conducted under general licences with minimal welfare oversight, and no requirement to target specific individuals humanely. The killing of sows during the farrowing season is particularly problematic as it creates orphaned piglets with no survival prospects. Internationally, coexistence frameworks using non-lethal deterrents, seasonal exclusion fencing and population monitoring offer more welfare-respecting alternatives that the UK has been slow to adopt.
