Electric fish are highly sensitive to water conductivity, electromagnetic interference, and the presence of other electric fish whose fields interact with their own. In captivity, inappropriate housing — especially keeping electric fish together or near electrical equipment — causes chronic sensory interference that is the equivalent of continuous loud noise for humans. Their specialized sensory ecology requires expert-level husbandry that most aquarium environments do not provide.
