Ostrich farming occurs across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Europe for meat, feathers and leather. Understanding ostrich behaviour and welfare needs reveals significant challenges in current production systems.
Ostrich welfare is poorly studied relative to other farmed species, and production practices that would be unacceptable for mammals persist with minimal oversight. Live feather plucking - removing flight feathers from conscious birds to supply the luxury fashion market - is one of the most clearly inhumane practices in animal agriculture. Despite industry claims of 'humane' plucking, the procedure causes pain and stress. Ostriches also suffer from poor handling practices: their size and power make them difficult to manage, and methods used can cause injury to both birds and handlers. Consumer awareness of ostrich product welfare is extremely low.
