Farmed Salmon Sea Lice Treatment Welfare

Sea lice are the primary health challenge in salmon farming. Treatment methods - including chemical treatments and mechanical removal - cause significant welfare harm. Prevention is the highest-welfare approach.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sea lice management creates a welfare dilemma: the lice themselves harm fish, but the treatments also harm fish. Both untreated infestation and aggressive treatment cause suffering. The welfare hierarchy prioritises prevention (lice-resistant genetics, deep lighting to prevent lice settlement, snorkels to keep fish below lice-dense surface water) above treatment. When treatment is necessary, the least harmful effective option should be chosen. The use of cleaner fish - lumpfish and wrasse - introduces a separate welfare concern: these fish have complex social and environmental needs that are largely ignored in salmon farm deployment, with lumpfish mortality rates often exceeding 50% in the first year.
