Multiple certification schemes claim to assure the sustainability and welfare of farmed seafood. Understanding what these labels actually guarantee - and where they fall short - helps consumers make informed choices.
Aquaculture certification labels are valuable but imperfect. ASC certification addresses environmental sustainability comprehensively and welfare partially; RSPCA Assured addresses welfare specifically but covers fewer species; organic certification addresses both but from a philosophical framework rather than a welfare-outcomes framework. No certification fully resolves the fundamental welfare challenges of intensive fish farming. The most honest advice is that certified products are generally better on welfare than uncertified alternatives, but even the best certification does not guarantee welfare outcomes that would satisfy a rigorous welfare assessment. Consumers should treat labels as useful heuristics rather than guarantees.
