Farmed Goose Welfare Beyond Foie Gras

While foie gras production draws most welfare attention, conventional goose farming for meat and down also involves significant welfare concerns that receive less public scrutiny.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Goose welfare awareness is narrowly focused on foie gras to the exclusion of other production systems. Live plucking for down - pulling feathers from conscious, struggling birds - is a significant welfare issue that affects geese across conventional production. The pain and distress of live plucking are well documented but poorly regulated internationally. Geese are cognitively and socially complex: they form lifelong pair bonds, recognise individual humans and other animals, and have well-developed emotional lives. Intensive production systems that prevent normal social interaction and behaviour cause chronic welfare compromise. The RDS (Responsible Down Standard) and other certifications attempt to address some of these concerns but live plucking prohibition is not universal.
